Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal has teamed up with the Auto Body Association of Connecticut to ask GEICO to take one of its commercials off the air because it is misleading and may promote steering.
The GEICO commercial features Charo and portrays a man saying "GEICO repaired it within a few days, like new," which Blumenthal says is misleading because insurers aren’t licensed or allowed to perform repairs in Connecticut.
Blumenthal said that he has sent a letter asking GEICO to take the ad off the air until it is corrected. He also said that he has asked the Connecticut Insurance Department to investigate GEICO for possible state steering law violations.
GEICO said the company "plans to adjust its advertising schedule" until the company "has had an opportunity to respond to Attorney General Blumenthal's concerns," in a written statement released to the press.
Blumenthal, in an interview with the Hartford Courant, said the company's response seems to be positive and he hopes the ad will be pulled. "My goal is to have them as an ally, not an adversary, in improving insurance practices in our state."
Regarding the commercial, though, Blumenthal told the Courant, "My strong suspicion is that GEICO either wants consumers to believe the literal claim or wants to create the impression it will have the car repaired within a few days like new."
