  • Inside the Wave

Modern scan tools, both OEM and aftermarket, have come a long way. More data parameters to use, faster refresh rates and better graphing all have played a role in making scan tool diagnostics easier. But there are still those occasions when I want to see what is happening directly without going through a "middle man," and those are the occasions I use my scope.

Custom Bay: Turning Over a New Leaf

Despite their strength and simplicity, leaf springs on a rear suspension don't last forever.

    ABS: Electronic Tips

What sets modern antilock braking systems (ABS) apart from conventional, hydraulic brakes is their electronic controls. Often, barely-measurable amounts of current can make the difference between full antilock brake systems (ABS) functionality and a tough-to-diagnose problem. Here are some tips — some general, some specific — that are worth remembering when servicing ABS electronics.

    Delivering the Goods

Every tech knows you have to have three things for an engine to run: compression, spark and fuel. But that is a little simplistic. An engine can have good compression, but if it can't breathe, it won't run right. An ignition system can have good spark, but if delivered at the wrong time, it means nothing.

    Motor Age Garage: Troubleshooting Traps

When our VAT40 died at the Ford/Jeep dealer, the shop foreman and service manager opted for what appeared to be a suitable succedaneum. The new tester came off the MAC tool truck for a cash exchange of about $1,700.

    Servicing Imports

The second generation Audi A6 was introduced in 1998 with a 2.8L engine that was "punched out" to three liters for 2003. Although the models with more powerful engines were critically acclaimed, the base 3.0L front wheel drive model has been the company's bread-and-butter in the U.S. market.

    ABS: Variations & Commonalities

Antilock braking may seem relatively new, but it first was used in aircraft, because the kind of pedal-pumping action once commonly practiced by expert automobile drivers is difficult or impossible in an airplane. The first systems, say some sources, go back to 1929.

Case in Point: Seeing the Light

When there's a failure in a vehicle's antilock braking system (ABS), the ABS computer is programmed to illuminate the amber "antilock" warning light and allow conventional braking. But how do failures in the foundation braking system affect operation of the ABS?

George's Sierra Shell: Fueling a Successful Future

No one knows exactly where or when it started, but since the first blacksmith decided to sell gasoline to a growing fleet of horseless carriages, the history of the gas station has been intertwined with that of the automobile. Once as commonplace on corners as Starbucks (now facing its own changes), true full service stations are few and far between these days. One notable exception: George's Sierra Shell in Fontana, Calif., which not only has survived, but thrived.
