Getting ground-hugging stance on a vehicle used to be a low-tech affair, sometimes consisting of
merely cutting a coil out of spring with a blowtorch. While this backyard procedure might have achieved the look,
the ride and handling often were negatively impacted, sometimes to the point of becoming downright hazardous. Times
have changed, and so have suspensions, especially on sophisticated sports cars like the Corvette.

There's an old truism in the automotive business that horsepower is what sells, but torque is what
moves the car. Well, offering a supercharger actually gives you a dramatic power-adder that can raise the
performace of both a customer's vehicle and your shop revenues.

Just as tuning your customer's engine can make a dramatic impact on performance, so too can tuning the

We've seen some fairly broad swings in fuel prices over the last year or so. That simple fact alone
means there are several good reasons for increasing the fuel capacity of a diesel pickup. With a larger tank, a
customer can shop around for the best price on fuel, and saving a few extra cents per gallon can really add up over
time, even offsetting the cost of the tank.

Engine need air, fuel and spark to start, and they must be correctly timed. But when either the crank

Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) have been around for more than 20 years, and Uncle Sam says that by
2012 all new cars and trucks will have mandated stability control. Scanners, oscilloscopes and digital
volt-ohmmeters are now everyday diagnostic tools. But braking still is a matter of using friction materials to grip
    a rotating disc or drum.

A wiring schematic is a line diagram of an electrical circuit showing all the components needed to
operate the circuit and the wiring paths that connect them. Back in the early days, a diagram including every
circuit on the car would only take up a few pages. Today, it can add up to a small book. That is one reason that
many schematics have been simplified into "block" diagrams, focusing on just one circuit and
showing only those elements needed by that circuit.

Battery management systems are simple in theory. Using a current monitor, only put as much current
back into the battery as you take out. Instead of maintaining a constant 13.8 volts (V) or thereabouts, a battery
management system checks the battery's state-of-charge (SOC) when the engine is off and when current flow is
essentially zero. From then on it will target a SOC of 100 percent or less in order to save fuel, avoid
overcharging and extend the life of the battery.

The 3,000-mile oil and filter change; it's as much a part of the American car culture as hot rods, car
hops and white wall tires. Most of us can count this maintenance as our first automotive service experience.
Whether we performed it ourselves in the driveway or watched as the family "mechanic" put the car
up on the lift and drained the oil, the 3,000-mile number has been ingrained into our culture as the standard

Valve stem seal problems are as old as overhead valves. Those puffy brown rock-hard deposits (that can
look kind of like brown ice cream) on the spark plugs aren't always so noticeable on some engine platforms with
leaking stem seals, but they blatantly tell the tale on others. Visible symptoms range from a puff of oil smoke
from the tailpipe when starting the engine after a soak to a full blown bug-truck mist that hangs in the air for
minutes after a vehicle passes. Some engines seem to give more valve stem seal trouble than others.

Starting in 2004, some GM vehicles began using a new data network system called GMLAN. GMLAN networks
use a new "Node Management Strategy." GMLAN is different from the older Class 2 network strategy
where modules wake up and send a State Of Health (SOH) message approximately every two seconds. With GMLAN, only
the modules involved in a given Virtual System of modules are "awake" and communicating at the

It was going to happen eventually; closed-loop combustion control has finally been introduced to the
diesel world. Since the first electronically controlled diesel engines appeared in the mid-80s, diesels have been
required to operate in an open-loop environment. This was not a problem at the time, because it was relatively easy
to meet existing emission control standards without using feedback from the combustion process. These earlier
engines relied first on ECM calibrations and then catalysts to bring their emissions into compliance.

Economic uncertainty has forced some enthusiasts to become more frugal when it comes time to modify

Every tech out there knows the importance of maintaining proper pressure in their customers' tires. If
your experience is anything like mine, you also know the majority of tires that pass through your service bays are
underinflated. But did you know (depending on which source you read) nearly 250,000 accidents and more than 800
fatalities each year involve underinflated tires? How about this little tidbit: It is estimated that fuel
consumption in the U.S. could be reduced by more than 10 percent if the tires on all those cars were kept properly
inflated. That's a lot of gas!

When only one catalyst on one bank has become restricted, the typical complaint is a lack of overall
engine power. If the restriction is severe enough, there will be a misfire on only one bank, and not necessarily on
the bank with the defect. This bank-isolated misfire is due to the effects on airflow through the engine with one
side of the exhaust system restricted.

Antilock braking may seem relatively new, but it first was used in aircraft, because the kind of

What sets modern antilock braking systems (ABS) apart from conventional, hydraulic brakes is their
electronic controls. Often, barely-measurable amounts of current can make the difference between full antilock
brake systems (ABS) functionality and a tough-to-diagnose problem. Here are some tips — some general,
some specific — that are worth remembering when servicing ABS electronics.

While engine mechanical diagnostics dates back to, well, ever since the first engines were made, the

When Cadillac introduced the world's first factory-installed electric headlights in 1912, driving at
night was still rare and risky. Steady improvements in power and brightness have reduced the risk, and today's
headlights can virtually turn night into day out to a distance of 200 feet. And focused beams can reach 600 feet or
more. But driving relies almost completely on visual cues, and the world looks very different under artificial
    light.

Unlike the Variable Reluctance (VR) sensors that output an AC signal, the output from a Hall-effect
sensor is a square wave. This square wave starts from the sensor reference ground level to a positive DC voltage of
typically 5, 8, 10 or 12 volts, depending on vehicle application. Hall-effect sensors, unlike VR sensors, always
are supplied a power and ground in order to operate the sensor's internal electronics.

When I first started in this business, you could diagnose most running problems based on a generalized
set of rules. Of course, this was in the day of carbureted engines and mechanical ignition systems. Today, the
Engine Control Module (ECM) does a pretty good job of keeping an eye on things. While there are general methods
used by the ECM for testing, the specific testing procedures programmed by an individual manufacturer can have an
impact on how you proceed with your diagnosis and repair.

Even in modern vehicles, rear-drum parking brakes are essentially straight out of the 1960s (or before.) And

diagnostics has become both easier and harder since it has become more integrated with electronics. If you are
comfortable with automotive electronics, you may already have found automatic transmission problems that you can
diagnose. But maybe you could use some help in diagnosing torque converter clutch (TCC) problems. There are plenty
of things you can do and learn to make yourself more comfortable with this diagnosis.

3M's Automotive Aftermarket Division announces the addition of the 125 Micron and 200 Micron welded-in
filters to its PPS brand Paint Preparation System line of disposable spray cups. The new filters from 3M offer
significant time savings for technicians by improving paint flow, eliminating the need to pre-strain paint with
